1958 GibsonES-335 – Sunburst (Mel Bay)

An early production 1958 Gibson ES-335TD in its original Sunburst finish. This 335 was specially made for Mel Bay Music in Kirkwood, MO. This was actually Mel Bay’s personal guitar and was purchased from his collection. We have a copy of Gibson’s ledger (pictured) showing this guitar being made and shipped to them. Early features of this 335 include an unbound mahogany neck with a rosewood fingerboard. It is one of the biggest 335 necks we’ve ever come across. The most unique features of this 335 are the side jack hole and body depth. 335’s came standard with the jack on the top and this is the only one we’ve ever seen with it on the side. The whole body is also 1/8 of an inch thinner in depth than a typical production model ES-335. These were both custom specs ordered by Mel Bay.
