1963 GibsonHummingbird – Cherry Sunburst
It’s pretty in the front, and party in the back with this gorgeous 1963 Gibson Hummingbird in its original Cherry Sunburst finish. Although… something is a bit different about this Hummingbird! Typically, the back and sides of this model would be made of Mahogany. This one, however, is fitted with beautifully figured and highly flamed maple back and sides. According to Gibson’s ‘60s shipping totals, the Hummingbird was Gibson’s most popular, higher-end acoustic, with 13,146 guitars shipped. Comparatively, the Dove, which had an identical construction, only shipped 4,367. When Gibson struggled to meet the Hummingbird’s demand, they pulled Doves and equipped them with Hummingbird specs. This was really only seen from 62-63, making this “Hummingdove” super rare to see! Beyond the maple, this guitar is equipped with a fine grained sitka spruce top, a mahogany neck and a rosewood fretboard. Thanks to its design, this guitar delivers a strong, balanced tone in a stunning package!
