1969 FenderStratocaster – “Fauxburst”
This 1969 Fender Stratocaster has a factory original “Fauxburst” finish! This means that this Sunburst guitar’s “grain pattern” was hand-painted over a white undercoat. A couple of different folklore-based theories are circulating about why Fender decided to do this. For one, it is speculated that by 1969, Fender was focused so heavily on churning out their custom color inventory that they experienced a temporary shortage of blank bodies. So, they took any already white guitars and painted on the grain to fulfill orders. Another theory is that to save money and prevent waste (a typical CBS-era move), multiple pieces of scrapped wood were salvaged together, and when the grain didn’t line up or look up to par, they sprayed white over the natural wood and painted the grain pattern instead! Regardless of why, these finishes are quite rare, and we’re happy to have this one available in our showroom! It is a gorgeous guitar that plays phenomenally and looks cool to boot, especially in areas where you can see the (yellowed) white undercoat!
