1966 FenderBass V – Olympic White

Have you ever seen one of these before!? First introduced in 1965, Fender’s 5-string bass design features an added high C, which was advertised as an entirely new concept in the field of electric basses. Though this model was short lived, its funky design and unique appointments make it a standout for Fender fanatics. This 1966 Bass V comes in its original Olympic White finish, which has slightly yellowed with aging of the clear coat. Additionally, there is a rectangle of discoloration on the back of the body, we assume from some sort of guard or sticker applied to this area that interacted with the finish. This bass sports a bound rosewood board, block inlays, and a split pickup accompanied by volume/tone controls. The matching headstock immediatly catches the eye, as quite frankly its huge. Plus, it boasts the cutest, mini elephant ear tuners. After the headstock, your eyes might drift to the neckplate. Fender made special, larger neckplates to accomodate the neck pockets of these basses, and gave them their own serialization that does not fall in line with the rest of Fender’s instruments. Every Bass V we have encountered features a serial number in the 600000 range, even though at this time Fender serial numbers were in the 100000-200000s. This can be confusing at first, as this model was discontinued after 1969, though Fender serial numbers would not reach the 600000s until the mid 70s. Sometime during this Bass’ life, a previous owner added a pickup cover from a Jazz Bass as a hand rest on the front of the body. We have included photos with and without the covers, so its future owner can decide which version they like best. Aside from the added cover, the Bass remains original and comes in a newer G&G hardshell case.
