1969 GibsonGibson – Les Paul Goldtop
In the vintage guitar world, 1950s Gibson Les Pauls are widely regarded as some of the finest guitars ever produced. If that is the benchmark, then the Les Pauls reintroduced in the late 1960s arguably represent the next-best thing. This example checks all the right boxes for a late ā60s Les Paul, featuring a one-piece mahogany neck, one-piece mahogany body, maple top, small headstock, long neck tenon, dot over the āiā in the logo, and potentiometer dates from the 52nd week of 1968. Cosmetically, the guitar shows only light playwear with minor nicks, dings, scratches, and light buckle rash, which is remarkable considering this instrument is now 57 years old. The guitar sports a comfortable medium to full C profile neck, and weight-wise, it sits beautifully in the Les Paul sweet spot. With an excellent refret using medium/jumbo fretwire, this instrument is a true player, delivering exceptional tone and feel, with a sense of magic in every note. Along with the refret, a new nut has been installed, the jackplate and truss rod cover are replacements and at one point the guitar was fitted with Schaller tuners, but the original tuners have since been reinstalled.
