1954 GibsonLes Paul – Goldtop
This 1954 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop really checks all the boxes. From its great neck to two screaming P-90s to its deep-dish top carve, it truly is a classic! The Goldtop was first introduced in 1952, marking a significant milestone in Les Paul’s iconic collaboration with Gibson. While initial examples featured a trapeze tailpiece, by mid-1953, the Goldtop was equipped with a wraparound tailpiece instead. While the Les Paul Model’s design would change again before evolving into the Les Paul Standard in 1958, any of these ’50s examples, regardless of year, are staples in any vintage collection. This example has an overall clean look, while still showing some signs of playwear, which helps to note its age and use. The aforementioned “great neck” is a medium to chunky C profile that fills out the hand nicely. The tone on this instrument is so resonant and snappy that it almost crosses over into Fender Telecaster territory while still retaining its depth of sound. This guitar remains original, nearly 70 years after it was first sold, complete with its original case and an old Gibson string box. There is some evidence of buffing on the front of the headstock, although this is underneath the original silkscreen logo and is only visible under blacklight. We believe it could be a factory, although it is difficult to confirm this.
